Airport guide

Rhodes International Airport “Diagoras” (RHO) opened in 1977 at Paradisi, replacing the old Maritsa airfield, and is named after Diagoras of Rhodes, the ancient Olympic boxing champion. It is the fourth-busiest airport in Greece after Athens, Heraklion and Thessaloniki and the main gateway to the Dodecanese, with around six million passengers a year, almost all of them between April and October.

The single terminal was extended by Fraport Greece, which has run the airport since 2017. Arrivals are on the ground floor and departures upstairs; the runway lies along the shore, so most landings offer a view of the west coast and, on clear days, the Turkish mainland across the strait.

Transport

The airport is 14 km from Rhodes Town on the west coast. A taxi to town costs from about €30, the KTEL bus runs to Rhodes Town for €2.60, and the east- and south-coast resorts are best reached by pre-booked transfer or hire car.

Parking

The car park is right in front of the terminal, with short-stay rates from about €3 an hour and long-stay from around €12 a day. Drop-off outside the door is limited to a few minutes; private meet-and-greet operators nearby offer cheaper weekly rates.

Local tips

  • Charter flights arrive and depart in waves, late morning and Saturday afternoons in July and August, so security queues can reach 45 minutes. Arrive two and a half hours before a non-Schengen flight (UK, Israel) and two hours before an EU flight.
  • The car park has no shade. A windscreen sunshade and a towel over the steering wheel are the difference between a hot car and a burnt hand when you get back.
  • The airport bus stop is across the road from the arrivals exit, not outside the door. People regularly miss a bus while waiting on the wrong side.
  • Non-Schengen departures (UK, Israel) go through passport control after security, and those are the queues that grow. Do not linger in the shops if your flight is to London or Tel Aviv.
  • With hours to kill before an evening flight, Kremasti beach and its tavernas are five minutes away by taxi, and the west-coast sunsets are the best on the island.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Rhodes Airport from Rhodes Town?

About 14 km. The drive along the west-coast road takes 20–25 minutes by taxi or car and 35–45 minutes by the KTEL bus, which stops in Kremasti, Ialyssos and Ixia on the way.

How much is a taxi from Rhodes Airport to Rhodes Town?

Around €30 on the day tariff, for the 20–25 minute drive to Mandraki or the Old Town. Fares are fixed by the local taxi association and posted at the rank outside arrivals; night trips (00:00–05:00) and luggage cost extra.

How much is a taxi from Rhodes Airport to Faliraki?

Expect about €40 by day for the 30–35 minute drive across the island. Kallithea is slightly less, Kolymbia about €50. For a family, a pre-booked transfer usually costs about the same and includes child seats.

Is there a bus from Rhodes Airport to the city centre?

Yes. KTEL Rodou runs the airport line to the bus station on Averof Street in Rhodes Town for €2.60, roughly every 30–60 minutes in summer between about 06:30 and 23:00. The stop is across the road from the arrivals exit.

How do I get from Rhodes Airport to Lindos?

Lindos is about 55 km and an hour away. A taxi costs around €80; a pre-booked transfer is similar and easier for groups. By bus you must first go into Rhodes Town and change to the east-coast KTEL service, which takes well over two hours in total.

Where can I park at Rhodes Airport?

In the surface car park directly in front of the terminal, run by Fraport Greece. Short-stay parking costs from about €3 an hour and long-stay around €12 a day; the first 10 minutes are free. Private meet-and-greet operators in Paradisi and Kremasti are cheaper for a week or more.

Can I wait outside the terminal to pick someone up?

Only for a few minutes. The road outside is a drop-off zone patrolled by the airport police at busy times. Check the live arrivals board first, then drive into the car park and use the free first minutes or pay for an hour.

Which car rental companies are at Rhodes Airport?

Avis, Budget, Hertz, Sixt, Europcar and Enterprise have desks in the arrivals hall, and many local island firms meet customers outside arrivals with the car. The cars are parked a short walk from the terminal.

Do I need to book a rental car in advance for Rhodes?

In July and August, yes: automatics and seven-seaters sell out weeks ahead and walk-up prices are much higher. In spring and autumn you can usually rent on arrival. Bring a credit card in the driver’s name for the deposit.

How early should I arrive at Rhodes Airport for my flight?

Two hours before an EU flight and two and a half before a non-Schengen flight (UK, Israel), which adds passport control after security. Charter waves on summer Saturdays and late mornings push queues past 45 minutes.

How can I check live arrivals and departures at Rhodes Airport?

The arrivals and departures boards on this site update automatically with scheduled and estimated times, gates, baggage belts and status. Open a flight for its details, or subscribe to alerts for a specific flight number.

What should I do if my flight from Rhodes is delayed?

Check the departures board here for the estimated time, then confirm with your airline’s app or desk. For delays over two hours EU rules entitle you to meals; over three hours on arrival you may be due compensation from the airline. Keep receipts and boarding passes.

Prices and timetables are indicative and change seasonally. Confirm before you travel.
